It was designed by Chris Green and co-directed by Chris and David Neumann, and conducted by maestro Dino Anagnost. The performances were held at the Avery Fischer Theater--Lincoln Center.

Aside from the amazing experience of performing at such an important American theatrical venue, perhaps the true joy of this project was to be working again with the more-than-excellent Chris Green. Having puppeteered his extraordinary puppets before at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, it was truly wonderful to see a new set of puppets crafted with his special blend of mechanical brilliance and re-purposing. I am always honored to work with his puppets and in his dramatic world.

The cast was an incredibly skilled and capable group, and I very much appreciated getting to know their world of New York puppetry. I must give special thanks to Lake Simons and Marc Petrosino, who served as my senior puppeteers for much of the show on the protagonist, Ivan (a 3-person Bunraku puppet). I also enjoyed getting to move the young tiger cub, Amba, and getting to interact with several of the kids after the show (of course as said tiger cub--needless to say, we all learned that day the tigers indeed DO like cupcakes).

This was an intense rehearsal process and and complex show, but I think the team really pulled it off--and nothing could confirm this more than the collective gasps, cheers, and applause of a thousand youngsters in the audience--and of course many youngsters in adult disguise.

Gneed Gnomes?

This August I was in New York City, where (amidst moving to a different sublet practically every five days--yikes! Guess summer housing in NY is in demand, to say the least.) I was really happy to work on another project by Tom Lee and Matthew Acheson. I helped build some marionette gnomes and scenic pieces for a new show at the Central Park Swedish Marionette Cottage. It is a cool story that both cute and quirky at the same time, about the history of the Cottage--half real, half fictitious. I also really enjoyed getting to meet Retta Leaphart, a puppet and theater director, who spent many long hours with me paper machie-ing all kinds of gnome-parts, boats, and spaceships.

The show is still at the Cottage in Central Park! It runs for most of 2011, so be sure to check it out if you are in NY!

Many thanks again to Matt and Tom, as well as the other builders and people who helped me in NY. I am so glad to gnow all of you :).

FYL//FLV

I am really happy to finally post this; after all the driving back and forth this summer listening to the radio (while orchestrating elaborate visual accompaniments in my head), and learning to work with Adobe Flash CS5, I am happy to post this music video extravaganza.

Somewhere between the (wonky) radio drifting to Drake singles repeatedly, and my interest in Mayan glyphs (in part inspired by a very interesting exhibit near the entrance of the British Museum), red birds and beating hearts emerged. Music videos are such an appealing medium to me; I love the potential to create images and stories which are inspired by rhythm and musical motifs, as well as the freedom to to deeply explore fantastic imagery and run away with concepts. Exciting stuff--any of you out there reading who are working on some kind of music video/music driven project and looking for artists...well, I'd probably be more than onboard. :)

Here is the link:

http://wfs.sbcc.edu:80/student/ewfinck/web/erikfinck_final/15_erikfinck_finalproject_main_CS4.html

(Note: There is a (short) interactive intro, which it seems not all browsers get along with. I am currently working on piecing together a batch render to make a video for other platforms.)

<img src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2C9XlYL3vf8/TZ08sEQVIzI/AAAAAAAAAJo/KaXoayU1mpk/s400/2010_11_erikfinck_general_resume_add.pdf2162.gif" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5592693040018170674" style="display: block; I got a chance to see how puppets are not just tools for artistry, but tool that NGOs, government agencies, schools, and even private companies are interested in for purposes such diverse as opening up dialogue about workplace harassment, to mere celebration of puppets ability to inspire fun and festivity. And of course, these new puppets live alongside some of the most ancient puppet traditions in the world.

Alongside the Kat Katha Puppet Arts Trust, I am still somewhat amazed at all the different projects and experiences we had. I worked as the lighting designer for their national tours of “The Little Blue Planet” (a show about global warming as experienced by a baby-planet avatar of your own) to Bangalore, Chennai, and Mumbai. I also served as a core member of the creative team of a new show we developed in a mere three months—a show based on Indian history and the origins of the Mughal Empire called “Anecdotes and Allegories by Gulbadan Begum”. The show was a combination of paper theatre, shadows, and miniature theater created with 3”to 6” tall paper machie puppets which were experienced though a small CCTV camera and projected onstage—a sort of cinematic effect created live. I built armies and palaces-full of these little guys, served as the narrator voice over, and even wound up portraying the excessive, drug-addict second emperor Humayun in shadow form. Here are some clips on Youtube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsVroODy0Bs
Many deep thanks to Pawan Waghmare, Muhammad Shameem, Choiti Gosh, Pavitra Sarkar, Nilaam, Umesh, Anand, and Asha for their friendship and all each day full of unpredictable and unforgettable experiences, and of course to my long time mentor and puppet guru, Anurupa Roy, for inducting me into her exciting puppet trust and puppet family. In January I found myself in Chiang Mai, Thailand (after a wild series of plane flights and layovers in December—airspace is an interesting place to celebrate Christmas!). I was part of a learning and production workshop environment designed by scenographer and wonderful puppet supporter Manuel Lutgenhorst. This pulled together artists from Thailand, the USA, and Myanmar to simultaneously learn about and train under the traditional system of Burmese string puppetry, while creating a new contemporary production which sought to integrate our 21st century work with the centuries old foundation of the Burmese marionettes. We performed this new show—an adaptation of a Burmese short story about a puppet master’s conflicted son and his four puppets—in both Chiang Mai and Bangkok, and the process was a really intricate, compelling, and eye-opening process of intercultural theater and the mixing of different ideas, values, and aesthetics. American designer and director Amy Trompetter headed the project alongside Lutgenhorst and Khin Maung Htwe, the artistic director of Htwe Oo Myanmar and the wonderful Burmese puppeteers who conditioned us into their artform. Later on, I was able to share some of these experiences in India on World Puppet Day 2010, where I gave a public talk at India International Center on the fundamentals of Burmese string puppetry and gave a small performance demonstration of my new marionette companion—the mountain mystic Zawgyi.

My heartfelt thanks to Naan, Aung, and Baba Gyi for their care, generosity, unparalleled skills, and invaluable guidance. The idea started with the Roots and Shoots Project--and initiative lead by Jane Goodall to try and promote the discussion of peace from an early age. The teachers banded together to find local donations for the supplies, and my contribution was the eventual fabrication of the dove and conducting a puppeteering workshop for the graduating sixth graders who would lead the dove through the procession. I was very impressed by their seriousness and dedication--and it is my hope that this little project got a least a few students, teachers, and local business owners thinking that perhaps peace may not be too much farther away than some old sheets and inner-tube ties--so long as we keep thinking about it.

Czech It Out! : Lit Moon Festival 2009

This past week saw the open and close of the 11th Lit Moon International Theater Festival. After many years as an enthusiastic supporter, I had the great honor and pleasure to join the company and festival as assistant to the director and a supporting designer/fabricator for the company's new production: and offbeat and terrifically zany staging of Fielding's "Tragedies of Tragedies". This festival was a particularly valuable experience; reconnecting with long time mentors John Blondell and James Donlon was a truly meaningful gift, as well as forging new friendships with phenomenally talented Czech and American artists, such as international clown Stevo Capko, trailblazing artist and performer Howard Lotker, and collaborating with Jaco Connelly--a superb designer-of-all-trades and perhaps my long lost puppet brother. May we all meet again (sooner than later!), and in the meantime enjoy a look at some of my contributions to our all-muslin constructed show.

“Ooooogy Green: And Other Fables” is coming back! Louise Hung and I premiered this show last spring at the Celebration Theater, and now it makes a stately reprise as the opening show for the 2009-2010 Saturday Scene children and family series at the Geffen Playhouse. Louise and I co-developed the show based on an existing text, and I designed the sets and puppets. (If you watch really close, you may also see me the behind the screen operating the shadow puppets as well.) Here is quick synopsis:

"Ooooogy Green" tells the story of a young, bug-obsessed misfit and his desire to fit it. Through classic Aesop’s fables and a new fable of his own creation, our misfit and his insectoid alter-ego Ooooogy Green learn to value diversity and embrace their own uniqueness. The second collaboration between Louise Hung and Erik Finck,” Ooooogy Green” employs highly physical approaches to acting and character, with whimsical shadow and puppet accents to shape the dramatic world. Brian Pugach adds exciting, original music and songs, and the team is completed by the talents of Jennifer Grace, Allie Roy, Joy Nash, Melanie Portney, and Michael Mullen. Appropriate for the whole family, “Ooooogy Green” is the latest effort by Finck and Hung to produce creative and stimulating approaches to children’s theater which challenge traditional notions of the genre.

(Check out more images at: www.erikfinck.carbonmade.com)

Back from Bulgaria: Project L.E.M.

This past July I was honored to work with NY based puppeteers Tom Lee and Matt Acheson, LA based video artist Jeff Burke and composer Jonathan Snipes, and writer/director Jared Stein on a new puppet project in development based on the writings of Stanislaw Lem.
